      Kosovo’s Supreme Court has acquitted a former senior member of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Sami Lushtaku, who had been convicted of war crimes against civilian prisoners.

    Sami Lushtaku, the mayor of Skenderaj/Srbica who was recently convicted of war crimes, his son and 22 other people, including senior justice ministry officials and prison guards, were charged on Thursday with various crimes which enabled Lushtaku to escape from custody on three separate occasions.

    Lushtaku first escaped from Pristina’s main hospital, where he was being treated under guard while in custody during his war crimes trial, on May 20, 2014, alongside Sahit Jashari and Ismet Haxha. They were on the run for three days.

    Like Lushtaku, both Jashari and Haxha used to be members of the Kosovo Liberation Army’s ‘Drenica Group’, and were also on trial for war crimes during the late 1990s conflict.

    Prison officials gave Lushtaku privileges which helped him to escape, according to the indictment raised by EU rule-of-law mission prosecutors, which BIRN has seen.
