My Ántonia by Willa Cather – an original 1918 review
Willa Cather’s My Ántonia (pronounced “an-ton-ee-yuh,” as in the name Anthony) is one of the seminal works of the American pastoral tradition, similar in style to O Pioneers! It is told as an imagined historical reflection by Cather’s childhood friend, Jim Burden. Appropriately, the novel begins with an epigraph citing Virgil’s Georgics – Optima dies…prima fugit (“the best days are the first to disappear”). Like Virgil’s Georgics or Hesiod’s Works and Days, Willa Cather’s My Ántonia celebrates nostalgia for the rustic, Arcadian life. The book was first published in 1918, and it is sometimes grouped together with O Pioneers! (1913), The Song of the Lark (1915) as Book III of “The Prairie Trilogy” (also called “The Great Plains Trilogy).
